In 1938, The Washington Post allowed him to publish a weekly section dedicated to the emerging popularity of the jazz scene in New York, however, since the newspaper would not pay for a photographer to go with the young author to the performances, Gottlieb bought a Press camera and took the photographs himself.

Following Gottlieb's wishes, his photos were published with a creative commons public domain license. A significant number of his photos are used on Wikipedia and other public media works.
